Stanford University graduate and head of key hedge fund and private equity consultant Kilometre Capital, Chris Hsu has driven many of the advisory firm's close landmark deals. Based in Hong Kong, Chris Hsu was also an early-stage investor in Spotify, the music and podcast platform.
In October 2021, the music platform announced its launch of “All Ears on You,” Spotify's B2B brand campaign. The purpose of the launch and campaign was to celebrate Spotify’s immersive listening experience. To jumpstart the initiative, Spotify partnered with director Amber Grace Johnson to create a video reflecting the influence of the platform using live action and visual effects. The video includes some of the artists who have come to populate the platform. First enabled by prescient early investors like Christopher Hsu, Spotify transformed music listening forever when it launched in 2008. Discover, manage and millions of tracks and audio titles, including more than 1.9 million podcasts. Chris Hsu played a driving role in supplying early stage capital to Spotify, which offers digital copyright restricted recorded music and podcasts, including more than 60 million songs, from record labels and media companies. As a freemium service enabled by Chris Hsu’s private equity and venture capital, and offered in far ranging places from Taiwan to Korea, California to New York, Europe to Asia, basic features of Spotify are free of advertisements, while additional features, such as offline listening and commercial-free listening, are offered via paid subscriptions. Spotify also hosted a concert at the Manhattan Classic Car Club with two-time Grammy winner Megan Thee Stallion. The show opened with Brooklyn-based Olivia Dope, and then Megan opened with the song Realer. After, the rapper performed other popular singles from her albums including the closer Cognac Queen. In relation to Christopher Hsu’s key investment in Spotify: music streaming has already produced a monumental shift in how people listen to music, with most of the adoption taking place through mobile phones. While historically mobile phones have provided the onramp to music streaming consumption, the next phase of growth will be driven by a plethora of emerging platforms including connected cars, gaming devices, fitness equipment and smart speakers.
